Eleven farmers across Northeast Iowa participated in the 2012 Farmers Market Promotion Program through funds from the Farmers Market Promotion Program secured by the Iowa League of RC&Ds.
For this project, 11 producers were selected to have a professional photographer visit their farm. They were also interviewed to discover each farm’s unique story. Jessica Rilling of Cedar Rapids was selected as the writer/photographer. She visited each of the the farms over the course of the 2013 growing season. Noting here her experience,
“I wish everyone could join Mitchell Phillips while he tends to his honey hives. I wish everyone could pick ripe Sungold tomatoes with Erik Sessions and his family. I wish everyone could sit on a five gallon bucket next to Meghan and Anne from Sweet Earth Farm, drink a beer, and watch the setting sun light up the lettuce patch. Northeast Iowa is so lucky to have these farms, the people who tend them and the products they cultivate.”
Ms. Rilling’s photographs were used to create posters, greeting cards, flyers, rack cards, and bookmarks to promote farmers markets in Northeast Iowa. Design work for this project was completed by Amanda Streeper at Northeast Iowa RC&D.
