Community Map for the Decorah Farmers Market

Project Overview

The Decorah Farmers Market is a popular destination in Decorah and Winneshiek County on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings from May through October. Many market shoppers are also visiting Decorah as tourists, so they look to the Market vendors or managers for advice and directions on other attractions they should visit or where to go for a meal or a drink.

To help orient these visitors and reduce the burden on market vendors and managers, Northeast Iowa RC&D worked with community and market leaders to create a list of the most frequently asked questions and popular Decorah locations and businesses. Northeast Iowa RC&D staff used that list to create a simplified but detailed map of Decorah featuring some of Decorah’s premier tourist attractions and destinations, “You Are Here” orientation markers, and unique wayfinding landmarks across town.

The resulting map was printed on a 2.5’ x 6.5’ durable outdoor interpretive panel that was affixed to the top of a picnic table at the Decorah Farmers Market. The unique table surface now serves multiple roles as wayfinding support, a tourism promotional tool, and an attractive art piece.
